My PhD, at the Prisons Research Centre in the Cambridge Institute of Criminology, focused on how men convicted of murder understood their offending and their lives, in light of serving prison sentences usually measured in decades. The research was carried out in two prisons in England & Wales. A lot happened during the PhD -- including a pandemic, a baby, and my being caught up in a terrorist attack -- and I’m no longer working on it full time, but working on it around a postdoctoral role at Birkbeck, in which I’m working on a comparative project seeking to understand the role of work and employment in prison regimes in the UK, Brazil, and the USA.
